Trendwatch: Pop Culture- inspired Themes

January 13th, 2014
If you loved period dramas like Downton Abbey and The Great Gatsby, you’re not the only one. Pop culture- inspired weddings are going to be popular this year. The key to making it work is attention to detail –to transport your guests back in time, fully embrace these romantic themes with our tips.
Downton Abbey: Aristocratic Charm

Make sure your wedding dress captures Downton Abbey’s fashion by choosing the right silhouette: look for a long-sleeve gown that is straight but flowing with a slight clinch at the waist. Because Victorian Britain was a conservative era, your gown should have longs sleeves but you can add a modern and romantic twist by making them sheer and lacy. Opt for a long traditional veil with a sparkling headpiece – the simplicity of your dress and veil with your headpiece will make your overall appearance exquisite.
For the venue, make sure you choose someplace that mirrors that elegance and grandeur of an English estate. A stone manor with a sprawling lawn exudes the right amount of rustic and class. You might even consider having lawn games like croquet for your guests to play during reception. With these ideas you are sure to have a decidedly English wedding that your guests will not forget.
The Great Gatsby: 20’s Glamor

The splendor of The Great Gatsby was in its spectacle so for your wedding, be sure to have plenty of feathers, champagne and brass. Choose a dress that is beaded and clings to your curves, a headpiece that wraps around your head like a turban and dramatic makeup that features a bold lip and a smoky eye.
For your venue, decorate liberally with a gold, black and red theme and use Art Deco-inspired patterns for your place cards. Consider having a tower of champagne glasses where bubbly is poured from the top. To elevate the glitz and glamor even more, have waiters were tails and white gloves and serve on a detailed silver platter. The 20’s may be over but you can make it roar again at your wedding.

The New Year is here, and with it comes a new year of wedding trends!
Luckily for you lovely readers, I had the opportunity to chat with some of the wedding industry’s most influential experts on the hot wedding trends we can expect to see a lot of in 2014.
If you’re a 2014 bride, take note, because here are the 5 trends that are going to rock the wedding world this year…

1. Brides in Color

Remember when your wedding dress color options were white, off-white and champagne? Well, those days are no more, because 2014 brides are rocking some serious color, particularly shades of pink and various metallics!
“Gold and silver wedding dresses were all over the runways at New York Bridal Market in October. Designers like Claire Pettibone, Lazaro, Romona Keveza showcased metallic gowns that are glamorous, but still totally wedding-appropriate.” - Kim Forrest, Editor of WeddingWire
“Pink gowns were all over the runway at bridal market for 2014. To make this trend accessible, mix up your pinks. One shade of pink can feel like overkill; introducing 3 (or more) shades from pale to bold creates a feminine, romantic wedding palette.” - Cathleya Schroeckenstein, Editor in Chief of Weddingbee
“We’ve seen pink wedding gowns hit critical mass, particularly for celebrity weddings — just a week ago, Kaley Cuoco wore a pink Vera Wang gown to her nuptials, and we’ve also seen star brides like Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway and Reese Witherspoon wear pink. Brides are looking for more color options that are a bit more unique.” - Kim Forrest, Editor of WeddingWire

2. Mixed Metallics

Metallics aren’t just hot for wedding dresses, they’re huge for decor in 2014 too!
“There is a huge push for metallics and mixing them!  Silvers and coppers, golds and platinum tones.  We see this in napkins, tablecloths and decor, paired with a lot of white and neutral flowers.” - Kia Martinson of ESToccasions
“Metallic detailing is everywhere. It’s perfect for any season, too. Mix up your metals – gold, silver, copper, and trendy rose gold, to rock the metallic trend in 2014. Our favorite metallic detailing comes in the form of mercury glass – spray painting the insides of glass vases and decor is a budget friendly way to achieve the look without breaking the bank.” - Cathleya Schroeckenstein, Editor in Chief of Weddingbee
“Gold and silver feel glamorous, luxurious, and have that Old Hollywood vibe that so many brides are looking for today, thanks to last year’s Great Gatsby inspiration.” - Kim Forrest, Editor of WeddingWire

3. Bye, Bye Mason Jars

No, you’re not going to get shunned if you use Mason Jars in your big day. Honestly, I don’t think they’ll ever go out of style in my eyes, but in 2014, we’re going to start seeing a lot less of them and a lot less of the rustic chic weddings we’ve been seeing over the past few years…at least as we know them today.
“In 2014, you’ll see continued romantic muted colors like blush, sage and white, but with more of a modern edge coming through. We’ll see less rustic, less mason jars, and more white ceramic or hobnail glass. Blue glass will also be very popular.” – Carly Cylinder, owner of Flour LA
“In 2014, we see a push for using science glassware, books and pots for centerpieces instead of the old common Mason Jar. There is also a huge push for natural elements, but not the ones we’ve seen before. Think rocks, deer antlers and real moss.” Kia Martinson of ESToccasions

4. Going High Tech

The world has gone high tech, so it was only a matter of time before weddings followed suit. 2014 is the year technology reaches mass appeal for soon-to-be brides and grooms!

“Brides and grooms are embracing their technology…and it’s accessible for everyone involved now. Sure, kids may not like Facebook anymore, but those of us getting married still do, and so do our parents (which is precisely why the kids aren’t that into it anymore). As we and our parents are embracing technology everywhere in our lives, there are awesome apps out there that help us communicate easier with everyone involved with the wedding. Wedding apps like Appy Couple and Wedding Party, or communicating to guests all the things to do in your wedding’s town via Pinterest’s Place Pins are streamlined and mobile ways to bring technology to the lovefest.” - Cathleya Schroeckenstein, Editor in Chief of Weddingbee
“Online RSVP technology for weddings has advanced to the point that a task that once took hours is now an automated process that takes minutes. Look for engaged couples to rely on online RSVP tools and apps to track their RSVPs and meal counts and get up-to-the-minute counts instantly.” - Jeff Kear, Owner of Planning Pod

5. Intimate Affairs

As weddings get more and more detailed, many couples are opting for smaller, more intimate affairs that enable them splurge on certain details while keeping costs affordable.
“Celebrities such as Keira Knightley opted for courthouse ceremonies followed by intimate dinner party-like receptions this year and the less famous are jumping on this trend. That does not necessarily mean cheaper weddings; a small wedding requires precise attention to detail and usually includes one or two wow factors. The smaller setting allows the wedding couple to really interact with their guests and promotes the intimacy of the event.” - Robyn Bruns, Owner & President of Red Letter Event Planning
